Islanders Gear Up For Next Season

Gone are the heady days of 1980-83 when the New York Islanders captured four consecutive Stanley Cups. The team was stocked with hall of famers back then. Skaters like Mike Bossy, Dennis Potvin, Bryan Trottier and Pat LaFontaine. The Islanders have not won any championships since capturing the Atlantic Division in 1987-88. Currently the team is realistically out of the hunt for a playoff berth. While some will choose to dwell on the short-term shortcomings of the team, others can grasp the big picture.

Injuries have had a devastating effect on performance and the “Isles” will rebound next season. Former all-star goalie Rick Dipietro has played in only 13 games the last two seasons. Multiple knee surgeries have hampered his comeback, but in seven games this year Dipietro had a very respectable 2.60 goals against average with a save percentage of .900.

Besides Dipietro’s two stints on injured reserve, there were 15 other instances where a player was injured severely enough to hit the list. Tim Jackman had a hip pointer and broken orbital bone. Steady veteran Doug Weight strained his groin and then had an upper body injury. Current points leader Kyle Okoposo has endured the flu and a mild concussion.

While Okopso leads the team with 44 points, John Tavares is right on his heels with 43. The former number one draft pick in 2009, Tavares has 21 goals and has converted on 12.43% shot attempts. Matt Moulson leads the team with 26 goals and converts at a 14.05% clip. Dwayne Roloson has been more than able in the goal, with a save percentage of .910 and 22 wins. Go out and purchase Islanders hats and jerseys to support your team. Wear your Tavares jersey with pride as he plays are hard as you should want your son to do.

Next year could be the start of another champagne stretch of Stanley Cups in this great hockey town that supports all their sports.

NJ Devils Hockey Town

A member of the NHL’s Eastern Conference, the New Jersey Devils are one of the most storied franchises in the past two decades, making the playoffs every single year except once (not including the lockout year). With future Hall of Famers Patrik Elias, Kirk Muller, Scott Niedermayer, Martin Brodeur and Scott Gomez, the Devils have quite a crop of all stars in the past. This dominance has continued into the 2009/10 campaign as well, as the Devils have retained a very solid record, standing at 43-25-4.

With prime positioning for the Playoffs this season, the New Jersey Devils can pretty much bank on closing this decade with a playoff appearance in every single season thus far. Led by all-stars Ilya Kovalchuk, Patrik Elias, Martin Brodeur, and Zach Parise, the Devils have one of the best crops of young talent in the NHL, with at least three players with at least 20 or more goals this season.

Brodeur leads the league in wins and has for the past few years, solidifying his claim for a Hall of Fame career. Although aging, Brodeur has a few seasons left under his belt and will lead the Devils for years to come if he can stay healthy. Being a goalie, he may be able to get a few extra years out of his career.

Fans looking to purchase gear, including NJ Devils jerseys, Devil hats, or autographs, have a few places to look. For jerseys, it is important to make sure you are getting the real deal. Places like eBay are known to have massive amounts of counterfeits, so the shop at NHL.com or similar sites is the way to go. Although expensive, fans looking for the real thing will be thankful in the long run.

It should be cool to watch New Jersey finish the season strong and end up with a deep playoff run to make their loyal fans proud.

MONTREAL CANADIENS MAKE PLAYOFF PUSH

The Montreal Canadiens are a hockey team with a checkered past that is looking towards the future. “Les Habs”, as they are known affectionately in Montreal, is a young team that seems to be a year or two away from a serious push to claim the Stanley Cup. You never know as the youth may develop quicker and be in the hunt before long.

The franchise has won the Cup a record 24 times but has not been a factor since the last title in the ’92-’93 season. Look for the Montreal Forum to be awash in a sea of red as the playoffs near. The fans will be banging on the glass and waiting on a hat trick. The ghosts of Maurice and Henri Richard, Guy Lafleur, Patrick Roy and Ken Dryden will stir to life for Canadiens fans.

The team is currently in sixth place in the Eastern Conference points race and looking ahead. The youth movement has served the team well, as Thomas Plekanec paces the team in points and assists.

However, the team’s most prolific goal scorer, Michael Cammalleri with 26, is currently on the injured reserve list and the team has struggled in his absence. With veteran Scott Gomez playing critical minutes and Jaroslav Halek in the goal the Canadiens have risen to the occassion.

Montreal has the second best power play in the NHL, converting 22.8% of the time. The penalty killing unit has a success rate of 82.9%. The offensive output has sputtered as the Canadiens average 32.2 shots per game, but when the shot is put on the net, the snipers convert at a 9.41% clip.

Combined with Halek’s .923 save percentage, look for Montreal to be in most games. While most fans can’t get to the Forum to cheer on “Les Habs”, they can purchase hats, sweatshirts and jerseys to show support. Get out and show your pride by wearing a Montreal jersey or Canadiens hat to the arena next time you go.

It is a beautiful city and everyone should go there at least once to watch some good hockey.
