Ichiro Suzuki, the hit man as I call him, is probably the greatest pure hitter since Tony Gwynn and could end up being right behind Pete Rose for all time hits when you figure his Japanese League stats. Many people do not even know his last name. They just were an Ichiro jersey and have no idea about his last name. Most jerseys have the last name of the player so that is why it is so unique.
Known in Japan for the longest time as a superstar is was not till he came to the USA that he was known around the world. Here he has excelled in a great area and constantly leads the league in hits and triples. Ichiro is often known by his great smile and hits, but he also plays great defense and has won multiple golden glove awards for the best fielder at his position.
I was in Seattle the other week and picked up an Ichiro jersey for my collection. This guy is a lock for the hall of fame and who knows how many years he can play. He does not need a ton of strength and stays healthy, so he could easily play another 5 – 10 years at this pace.
Another reason why Ichiro ended up in Seattle is their location. They have a huge Japanese following there and almost all of Ichiro’s games are shown back in Japan. Ichiro jerseys are sold by the boatload over there and he is seen as an icon for his great play and humble attitude. He is a true champion in every aspect of life.
The Mariners have not been that great of late so it is time for them to get back on track to make the MLB playoffs. Since Ken Griffey left they have not been the same team as they were, but they still bring in the fans to see them play. It is hard to compete with a lower payroll than teams like the Yankees, Marlins, Angels, but they can do it if the young talent can come through.
