Many of the youth today know the Yankees for Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez. People tend to forgot the great New York Yankees that started it all.

Babe Ruth was first a Red Sox player in the early 1900′s until he was traded to New York and put on a jersey there. To make a long story short he became the all time home run leader that was not passed until Hank Aaron did so many years later. The Babe Ruth jersey is one of the finest around and if you can find an authentic Ruth jersey, you could probably pay for your kids college. If you can find one autographed, that would be amazing.

After Ruth, came Lou Gehrig and the famous Yankees of the next era. He is often remembered by his speech where he considers himself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. He was a great hitter for average and power and lead New York to the World Series on multiple occasions. After he died the Lou Gehrig jersey was retired and I do not think anyone would doubt he is one of the greatest players of all time.

Mickey Mantle was the next great talent that came to MLB in 1951. His 1952 Topps rookie card and any signed baseball of his is worth huge money. Basically Mantle had it all. Speed, power, a great personality, amongst other great qualities. Many forget how fast he was until he hurt his knees and had to stop stealing bases. I saw a Mickey Mantle jersey once sell at auction for over ten thousand dollars. It was deemed and authentic game jersey from back in the 50′s. What a find for that buyer. Much better than any throwback jersey that you find today. Mantle hung it up for good after the 1969 season and will go down as a one of the faces of the Yankees.

Perhaps the greatest memory of New York was when Maris and Mantle battled it out for the Home Run title in the early 1960′s. Maris ended up breaking the record held by Babe Ruth, but he never really lived up the great year. Many people wanted Maris jerseys, but he was not nearly as popular as the other huge Yankee players.

These players are one of the reasons the Yanks have some of the highest apparel, gear, hats, and jersey sales of any baseball team. Their players are very talented and handle themselves great both on and off the field.
