The OJ Mayo jersey has been well known since this kid was in high school. He was hyped up as the next greatest thing since Lebron James. Early on people knew he was talented, but he ran into some road blocks going to school in Cincinnati and West Virginia at the high school level. From there he was going to follow Bob Huggins to the Cincinnati Bearcats, but things changed and Huggins ended up at Kansas State instead. OJ Mayo did not want to wear this Wildcats jersey so he ended up playing for the USC Trojans out in LA.
If the new NBA draft rules were not in place Mayo would have went straight to the pros, he was that good of a player. At USC he was a solid player but you could tell he still had more in the tank. He was drafted in the first round of the NBA draft after his Freshman season at USC. After watching him play a few times I figured he would be a great talent if he could focus his game on the next level and not get distracted.
His high school teammate Bill Walker has done very well for himself too, which should drive OJ to play to the highest of his abilities. Walker ended up going to Kansas State for a few years along with coach Huggins. They had some good teams there and Walker excelled before he got drafted into the NBA.
While playing for Memphis will not get him the most TV time, he is excelling with other young talented players and could make a playoff appearance before long. That always helps players as more people watch during the playoffs than any other time of the year. I think he will have a great career if he can just live up to his potential that everyone has seen.
