Although the Sabres have never won a Stanley Cup, they have proudly represented the Eastern Conference twice in the championship game. They lost in 1975 to the Philadephia Flyers and then again in 1999 to the Dallas Stars as a result of the infamous “No Goal” scored in overtime of game 6 by Brett Hull.
Riding on the shoulders of Olympic Silver Medalist goaltender Ryan Miller and the surprising play of rookie sensation, and Calder Trophy favorite, Tyler Meyers, they finally stand a chance to make a deep run in this year’s playoffs after a two year absence from the big show. Fans are still stewing over the poor management of the Chris Drury and Danny Briere fiasco a few years ago and the team really needs a solid playoff performance this year to get everyone fully back in their corner. Who knows, maybe this is finally their year.
The Sabres have seen some incredible talent over time. The “French Connection” from the 1970′s, made up of Gilbert Perreault, Rene Robert, and Rick Martin. The dynamic duo of Pat LaFontaine and Alexander Mogilny and the best goalie to ever play the game, Dominik Hasek. Sabres jerseys, hats and other gear still flies off the shelves for some of the greats even long after they have hung up their skates.
Buying their shirts is a way fans love to show their appreciation. It is really difficult to believe that they have never been able to capture Lord Stanley’s Cup when looking back at some of the talent that has called Buffalo home.
Buffalo Sabres fanatics are happy to see their team atop the Northeast division and hope that “Millsy” and the boys can bring home another, slightly larger, piece of silver to Buffalo this year. Even if they do not make it all the way to the title there is always next year. True hockey fans never let their team down if they have an off year.
