JaJuan Johnson#25 Purdue Basketball

With only a few weeks until March Madness begins, it is time to discuss which teams flying under the radar have a good chance of making a run in the NCAA tournament.  The Purdue Boilermakers, lead by JaJuan Johnson, are kinda flying under the radar in the Big Ten, even though they just beat OSU.

Many thought OSU would win that game, but Purdue got hot and made some baskets when it counted.  Many fans I saw had on a JaJuan Johnson #25 jersey in order to help out the home team, even though he was double teamed much of the night.  While they are a very dangerous team, people will not be surprised by them any more after their big win. After Hummel got hurt for the year, many writers and basketball fans wrote off Purdue and did not think they would get very far.

That appears to be wrong as Purdue basketball is near the top 10 in the country and has a lot of momentum going into the Big Ten tournament the first week in March. The tournament brings some funny things, if you can remember George Mason making a Final Four run a few years ago and Davidson nearly pulling it off with Stephen Curry two years back. Could BYU or San Diego State make a run this year?

We will know in a few weeks and getting by that tough first round matchup is often the hardest part. There are many teams that can win on a given day and that is what makes the 1st round of the NCAA tournament so great. Ten times better than the BCS, but that is a story for a different day.

Let us look forward to great college basketball and watch for the big upsets that seem to happen every year in the tournament.

My prediction is for Purdue to make it to the Sweet 16.

Deron Williams New Jersey Nets

Wow!  What a trade.

Deron Williams is now a New Jersey Net.  After failing to get Carmelo, many thought the Nets would not do anything until the offseason. Well, most people were wrong. Williams is a top 3 point guard in the league, if not the best, and will be the catalyst for the Nets to build around for many years to come.

He is a large point guard that can score as well.  His big size also allows him to play solid defense against some of the best guards in the league. He really has no weakness to his game, but he does got unnoticed a bit over in Utah. Now, with the New Jersey Nets you should see more press coverage of him on the East coast.

No one really picked a Deron Williams Nets jersey, and many were surprised to see him traded, since there are not many unknown trades happening these days with the likes of Twitter, FB, and so on. But this one caught many people off guard.

Without Deron Williams Utah may not have even been a playoff team, and the Nets still may not be right away, but he will be leading them in the right direction.

Williams and the Nets should both benefit from this trade and many New Jersey fans will now go out and buy jerseys, hats, shirts and so on to support their team.  It has been a few years since the Nets were really good and the fans are waiting for a return to the playoffs. While they did not get Carmelo, they still got a great player that will have the ball in his hands almost every time down the court.

It should be an exciting last few months of the season to see if the Nets can make a late season playoff run. You never know in the east.

DaQuan Bowers DL From Clemson

Right now him and Fairley are neck and neck for the 1st defensive lineman taken in the next NFL draft.  At 6’4” and almost 300 lbs, DaQuan Bowers definitely has the size to be a force in the NFL.  As a Clemson Tiger, he led the orange and white in sacks and was a force in the ACC the entire season.

Bowers has an amazing pass rush and many compare him to Peppers.  He is fast for a big guy and may even bulk up some more to help him stop the run.  He needs to be careful though not to lose any of the quickness that has made  him almost a lock for a top 5 NFL pick come April.

While he had a great year, Clemson was down a bit and did not live up to the hype this year.  They just seem to be a few plays short every year from making a run at a ACC title.  It is a shame since it is such a great school down in South Carolina.

No matter where he is drafted, you will see many people wearing the new DaQuan Bowers jersey come training camp as many think he will be as dominant as Suh was in his first year in 2010.  The 2011 NFL Draft should have some surprises, but I doubt you will see many in the top few picks.  People do not like to guess and like the sure thing that most of these guys are, even though there is no sure thing in any draft.

Other top picks look to include Peterson, Fairley, Newton, Locker, and AJ Green.  The combine and pro days will give us more detail on where they will fall, but I think each guy I mentioned in this article will be a top ten pick.

Gotta love draft day.

Just a few months away still………..

Wow did he slip!  DaQuan Bowers now a Tampa Bay Buccaneer, but it sure took a while. Wow.
