Matt Garza Cubs

On the path to success again, the Chicago Cubs have just picked up Matt Garza.  This ace should be an immediate impact player that will help the Cubs to hopefully get a World Series victory.  It has been over 100 years, I think they are due at least one.

Garza is a top notch pitcher that rarely gets shelled and pitches deep into games. The Chicago Cubs fans are probably talking about it right now, as this could be the missing piece they need to get back into contention.

They did have to trade a bunch of their prospects, but hey let us try to win one now, we have waited long enough as a Cubbies fan.

They had solid batting last year with Ramirez and Soriano, but have to find more consistent hitting in the clutch to help them produce a few more runs. Overall though, they have enough offense to be very competitive.

On the other side, their pitching struggled quite a bit. Beside for Dempster, they really did not have a good staff and the bullpen showed some weaknesses too. Bring Matt Garza on should not only make the staff deeper, maybe the young guys can learn from him the process as well. Good pitching is contagious, and it could be a huge asset just to have him in the clubhouse. The Cubs need some positive attitudes around there and this can do nothing but help.  Fans will soon be trying to get a Matt Garza Cubs jersey as the season is only a few months away. They will still have to worry about signing some of their other talent, but you have to start somewhere.

The season is now looking up for the Cubs and their first goal needs to be winning the NL Central and then making a pennant run. Should be very fun to watch.

Michigan State Guard Kalin Lucus

Senior guard Kalin Lucas has become the 10th leading scorer in Michigan State men’s basketball history. For one of the nation’s top programs, that’s a huge accomplishment. The 6’1” guard from Detroit is averaging nearly 15 points per game while shooting 3’s at a career best clip of 40%.

Lucas, one of the quicker guards in the nation, is still recovering from a torn Achilles heel injury he suffered in last season’s NCAA tournament. Lucas has healed and rehabbed quickly but has not regained his quickness. This year hopes to be different as the Spartans look to be solid once again.

Michigan State, ranked #2 in preseason polls, is struggling a bit this season. Their recent loss at home to Texas, their first non-conference home loss since 2003, dropped their season record to 8-4. Three of those loses have been to ranked teams Texas, Connecticut, and Syracuse. Not to fear, as it is very early/

In classic MSU fashion, Coach Tom Izzo has crafted a difficult non-conference schedule to prepare his team not only for the rugged Big Ten but for the larger prize of glory in March Madness. Izzo’s teams have made half of the Final Fours (six of twelve) since their national championship season of 2000, a team led by Mateen Cleaves.  While he may not be remembered like Cleaves, the Kalin Lucas jersey is worn by many fans up in East Lansing. MSU is a great college town that loves to support their teams, especially basketball.

Lucas and Izzo are counting on special seasons from leading scorer senior Durrell Summers and leading rebounder junior Draymond Green. For the Spartans to make another Final Four run, Summers, Green, and Lucas will have to peak in March and April.

If Lucas can return to his quick self before the sustained injury, and mature in his decision making and ability to limit turnovers, he’ll have a great opportunity to be selected in the first round of the 2011 NBA draft.

Marcus Lattimore South Carolina Gamecocks

Rarely does a freshman college football player make as much of an impact as Marcus Lattimore has made for the South Carolina football team this year.  He has ran with speed and power and is going to the the Gamecocks to the SEC Championship game in a few weeks.  He is also an excellent receiver out of the backfield.  He is on pace to have over 20 touchdowns and should be one of the top NFL prospects in the next few years.

Lattimore has excelled in a tough conference and against some of the toughest defenses in the country.  If you go down to SC you will see many of the fans wearing their Marcus Lattimore jersey to support the team in their drive to an SEC crown. Spurrier has these guys playing at a very high level and they already beat a top 3 ranked Bama earlier in the year.

South Carolina will have a tough time in the SEC title game but if they play the same way they have all season they should have a chance.  They have to have a balanced attack and not turn the ball over, as turnovers really kill any chance you have of winning the football game.

Even if they do not win it and go to a BCS bowl, he will be back for at least one more year and probably more.  Running backs normally do best staying in school a few years and maturing before making the leap to the big leagues.

If he can keep this up I bet he will be a top 5 candidate for the Heisman trophy next year when he returns as a sophomore.  When you play in the SEC you get noticed really quickly if you have a few big games against some of the toughest teams in the nation. It should be an interesting end to college football season over the next month or two.
